Principles, Codes & Policies 


Humanitarian principles are a set of ethical standards, some of which are to be found in international law, which seek to protect the humanitarian imperative and the integrity of humanitarian assistance. AAI pursues principled humanitarian action applying the following principles

  • Humanity: the provision of humanitarian assistance where it is needed and in a manner which respects the rights and dignity of the individual.
  • Impartiality: the provision of humanitarian assistance without discrimination among recipients and guided solely by needs, with priority given to the most urgent cases of distress.
  • Neutrality: the provision of humanitarian assistance without engaging in hostilities or taking sides in controversies of a political, religious or ideological nature.
  • Independence: the provision of humanitarian assistance in a manner that is autonomous from the political, economic, military or other objectives of actors engaged in the areas where humanitarian action is being undertaken.

Codes of Conduct

AAI also adheres to the following Codes of Conduct in the delivery of its humanitarian programs.

  •     The Sphere Humanitarian Charter & Minimimum Standards in Humanitarian Response

AAI is a non-profit company limited by guarantee which operates the AAI Overseas Relief Fund. This fund has Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status with the Australian Tax Office.

AAI is committed to protecting your privacy in every way possible including complying with Australian and Victorian privacy laws in relation to collecting, using, disclosing, securing and allowing access to your personal information. Your identity is kept confidential and the information you provide is only used for the purposes outlined below. We aim to provide a safe, secure and informative experience for you on this website. 
Personal information held by AAI may include:
1. Contact information (e.g. name, address, phone and email address). Your contact information may be used to process donations, provide receipts, and send you information about AAI. By letting us know, you can choose not to receive further correspondence from us.
2. Donor number. Each donor is allocated a number to assist AAI in the processing of donation and contact information with our records.
3. Financial information, e.g. donations history, is used to process donations, issue receipts and answer queries from donors.
Our site uses cookies for online donations to identify users. This allows us to deliver a more efficient and personalised service. Information is retained via the cookies that alleviates the need for repeated entry of details.

Secure Financial Transactions
When you make a donation or order from our on-line catalogue, we use National Australia Bank Transact Payment Services to securely transmit financial transactions to the National Australia Bank in real time. Due to the use of this technology, your credit card number is never stored on our server or in any place on the Internet. AAI complies with Payment Card Industry (PCI) security standards in relation to the receipt and handling of credit card data. Further details of these standards can be viewed at: Notwithstanding our detailed security measures, we are unable to warrant that unauthorised access to data cannot occur.
How Your Donation Is Used
AAI is committed to following your preference in how you want your donation used. However, if more funds than required are received for a particular project, program or item, AAI will use the surplus funds in another project or program within its general emergency response programs.
