VANUATU

AAI has established a new partnership with a local NGO in Vanuatu. If you are thinking of volunteering with AAI here is another opportunity.

Medical Santo History and Organisation

Churches of Christ Medical Santo is a not-for-profit humanitarian medical organisation registered in Vanuatu to provide Primary Health Services and support the existing health services in Northern Vanuatu. AAI and Medical Santo are working in partnership with the Vanuatu Ministry of Health to provide health services to local populations.

Location

Medical Santo is based in the town of Luganville on the island of Espiritu Santo, which is the second largest town in Vanuatu. It is about a one-hour flight north of the capital Port Vila.
Vanuatu is a safe place to visit. Everyone extremely friendly and food is always plentiful. The weather remains warm all year round with the only two seasons: ‘wet’ and ‘dry’.

Mission and role

AAI and Medical Santo partnership in Vanuatu concentrates on Primary Health Care, Children’s Health, Women’s Health, Hypertension, Diabetic Management and Wound Care.  The clinic has regular daily hours Monday to Friday, as well as an emergency after-hours capability.
In support of the Vanuatu Ministry of Health we aim to integrate some of our volunteer health professionals into the local Northern Area hospital. Luganville has the second largest hospital in Vanuatu, which services about 145,000 people.

Working with us

Many of the patients who attend our clinics are already quite ill when they present. Our acute room is equipped to handle many types of emergencies as it is possible that people will be bringing in dehydrated children, sepsis from wounds, diarrhea, vomiting and conditions they have had for weeks or months.  We concentrate on primary health issues, diabetes management and hypertension and education for better quality of life.  Non-communicable diseases are increasing at an alarming rate.
The Vanuatu Ministry of Health is eager for us to have many volunteers integrated into the hospital to compliment their limited resources.
